Church of St Teresa Singapore

Church of St Teresa Singapore

Tucked away in Kampong Bahru is a slice of hidden gem – the Church of St. Teresa – Singapore’s first rural church and the only one in that Romano-Byzantine style.

Built in 1929, this beauty has a fascinating backstory. Apparently, the land was a gift from St. Therese herself (yes, the patron saint of lost causes – how fitting for finding a church in the heart of the hood!).

Now, the architecture? It’s a masterpiece. Think grand domes, cupolas that reach for the sky, and stained-glass windows that tell stories like nobody’s business. Plus, there are these five bronze bells that chime a tune straight outta France – 1927 vintage.

But St. Teresa’s isn’t just about looking good. It’s a thriving community hub for over 3,000 parishioners, and even the seafarers have a special corner here – the Apostleship of the Sea calls this church home.

Of course,  I wouldn’t leave you hanging without mentioning the modern touches. The Chapel of Mount Carmel is all about quiet reflection with a sprinkle of contemporary style. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after battling the crowds at the hawker center.

So, if you’re looking for a dose of history, a sprinkle of Parisian chic, and a whole lotta Kampong cool, head on down to the Church of St. Teresa. Just remember to check their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/stteresasg/) for mass timings and events.
